ADIDAS ZX 8000 “MADE IN FRANCE” – THE RETURN OF AN ICON

THE STORY
When adidas introduced the first ZX model, the ZX 500, in 1984, nobody could have imagined that it would become one of the most important running franchises of all time. The original three-digit ZX models were developed throughout the 1980s and produced almost exclusively in France. This was made possible by Horst Dassler, son of adidas founder Adi Dassler and head of adidas France. Some of the most legendary adidas models ever created were manufactured in French factories, including the facility in Dettwiller. Among them were the Superstar, Stan Smith, Top Ten, and of course the early ZX silhouettes.

With the introduction of the four-digit ZX series in 1989, a new chapter began. Jacques Chassaing and Markus Thaler developed models that elevated technological innovation and running performance to a new level. While the ZX 8000 set new standards with its revolutionary Torsion System and focus on cushioning, the ZX 9000 was designed around maximum support. With the ZX 9000, adidas reached the peak of the legendary four-digit ZX era. While the ZX 8000 represented cushion and the ZX 9000 represented support, Jacques Chassaing was already working on the next chapter, the ZX 10000. Before the series could leap into five-digit territory, however, the new Equipment line took over in 1991. Years later, Overkill would revisit that story together with Jacques and adidas through the adidas ZX 10000.

The early 1990s also marked a period of major change in Europe. "Made in West Germany" became "Made in Germany" after reunification, while adidas gradually shifted large parts of its production to Asia. It marked the end of an era closely tied to European manufacturing, particularly in Germany and France.

THE ADIDAS ZX 8000 “MADE IN FRANCE” FROM 1991

Few sneakers embody this history better than the adidas ZX 8000 Made in France from 1991. Carrying the article number 033555, it is considered one of the rarest and most sought-after original ZX models ever released. Unlike most footwear of its era, it was not produced in Asia but continued to be manufactured in France, likely making it one of the last representatives of European ZX production.

To this day, numerous myths surround the sneaker, which is often referred to simply as “The Frenchman” among collectors. Was it a regular release or merely a regional experiment? Even within the global ZX collector community, only a handful of documented pairs are known to exist. A French-produced ZX 9000 would later appear as well, although in the standard Hydra colorway.

To learn more about the shoe, we turned to the person most closely associated with the adidas ZX franchise and someone who also worked for adidas France: Jacques Chassaing. According to Jacques, the shoe was most likely manufactured in France but not designed there. In the same year the sneaker was released, 1991, adidas decided to close its footwear design department in Dettwiller. Jacques and his colleagues were required to relocate to Herzogenaurach, an emotional moment for everyone involved.

His theory is that the sneaker was assembled in France using midsoles produced in Germany and uppers manufactured in Korea, allowing it to carry the "Made in France" label. According to Jacques, this was likely the result of coordination between production managers in Germany and France. Other factories may simply not have had the capacity to produce the shoe at the time.

With its original ZX 8000 construction, Torsion System, and largely unknown production history, the ZX 8000 Made in France remains one of the most fascinating chapters in adidas ZX history.

When the adidas ZX 8000 was first introduced in 1989, it debuted in the now legendary Aqua colorway, still regarded as the definitive ZX look. Only a few years later, adidas began experimenting with alternative color schemes. The ZX 8000 Made in France occupies a special place in that evolution. It is considered one of the earliest known standalone colorways of the model and marks the beginning of a development that continues to shape the ZX franchise today.

The upper combines white pinstripe mesh with white suede overlays, finished with black Three Stripes and a light blue sole unit. What began as a regional departure from the iconic Aqua colorway would eventually become part of the ZX DNA. Hundreds of colorways, collaborations, and special editions would follow, from the ZX 9000 Wood Wood and ZX 8000 Overkill to the AZX series.

The Made in France therefore represents more than European craftsmanship. It marks the beginning of the creative diversity that helped turn adidas ZX into one of the most influential sneaker franchises of all time.

For more than two decades, Overkill has stood as one of the strongest advocates for preserving and advancing ZX culture. Together with adidas, we continue to work toward keeping the story of this legendary series alive for future generations.

That is why we are proud to bring back the adidas ZX 8000 Made in France as an almost exact one-to-one retro, featuring the original colorway and materials, exclusively at Overkill. This project is an SMU, or Special Make Up, meaning it was developed specifically for a retail partner in close collaboration with adidas and will be available only in limited quantities.

For the campaign produced in Berlin, OVERKILL is collaborating with German rapper Yung Saint Paul. The campaign deliberately bridges the gap between sneaker history and the present: It is aimed at both longtime ZX collectors and a new generation to introduce them to the history of this extraordinary model.

Almost 35 years after its original release, not only does a sneaker return, but also a unique piece of European adidas history.
