With our latest collaboration with adidas Consortium, we’re bringing together two chapters of adidas history that have been part of our world for many years: ZX and Equipment.
The result is “The Missing Link” – a two-shoe pack built around one simple question: What if ZX and Equipment had come together in 1994?
Our answer comes in the form of the adidas ZX 8000 Overkill and the all-new adidas ZX 8094 Overkill. Two shoes that share the same visual DNA, but take two different approaches to the shared history of ZX and EQT.
THE MISSING LINK
At the heart of the pack is the ZX 8094 – an entirely new silhouette combining characteristic elements of the ZX series with key design cues from the EQT Support 91.
We didn’t simply want to take an existing ZX and give it an EQT-inspired colorway. The idea was to genuinely merge both design languages within the construction of a new shoe, creating a silhouette that could look like a previously missing chapter in adidas history.
The foundation of the ZX 8094 comes from the four-digit ZX series of the early ’90s. The tooling and distinctive stitched heel counter reference the construction of the iconic ZX 8000. These are combined with key elements of the EQT Support 91, with the TPU cage, upper and material choices drawing inspiration from the Equipment silhouette.
The colorway also brings both worlds together. A subtle base is contrasted by accents in unmistakable EQT Green – a color that, perhaps more than any other, represents the Equipment era and its distinct design language.
The name ZX 8094 ultimately sums up the concept: a new ZX imagined as a hypothetical next step in the evolution of the series in 1994.
A ZX 8000 THROUGH THE EQT LENS
Alongside the new ZX 8094, we deliberately chose one of the most recognizable classics from the ZX series: the adidas ZX 8000 Overkill.
While the ZX 8094 merges both worlds through its construction, the second shoe remains a classic ZX 8000 in terms of shape and design. Instead, we transfer the color palette of the new hybrid onto the familiar silhouette.
The signature EQT Green appears here as well – including on the Three Stripes – creating a direct visual connection to the ZX 8094. Custom Torsion design elements add further details.
Both shoes therefore tell the same story in different ways: the ZX 8094 imagines how ZX might have evolved under the influence of Equipment, while the ZX 8000 shows how the EQT aesthetic translates onto an established classic.
Together, they form “The Missing Link” – connecting ZX and EQT, archive and reinterpretation, the familiar and something entirely new.
Both models feature special OVERKILL branding on the heel, insoles, tongue labels and the Torsion bar in the midsole. Each pair also comes with two additional sets of laces and an extra pair of co-branded lace tags.
FROM SNEAKER TO ATELIER
For us, a special release has always been about more than just the shoe. That’s why we’re taking the idea behind “The Missing Link” into another creative context for the release in Berlin and Cologne.
For the occasion, we’re transforming several areas of our Berlin store as well as the entrance area of our Cologne store into a temporary OVERKILL Atelier.
We invited artists Dr. Molrok, Dr.Yo, BASE23, N.O.Madski, Otto Baum, Mathias Weinfurter and Kai Semor to explore the pack and create new works specifically for the release.
The starting points are the design, color palette and story behind the two shoes. Where those elements lead is deliberately left up to each artist and their individual creative approach.
In Berlin, the exhibition won’t be limited to a single room. Different areas throughout our store will become part of the atelier, with the artworks extending across the various spaces and bringing art, sneakers and the store together as one shared experience.
In addition, the participating artists have created limited-edition art prints exclusively for the release. Anyone purchasing the pack from us on release day will receive one of these prints while supplies last – giving you the chance to take a piece of the OVERKILL Atelier home with you.
